Swindon

Swindon’s ‘Arc of Opportunity’ – perceptions of the town are hampered by the poor environment linking the town centre to its station and surrounding railway lands, originally developed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and the Great Western Railway. A host of opportunities within this area need tackling

Swindon might be ‘the worst house on the best street’ in Britain - on the M4, and the main line from London, surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty. But property values are well below those of its rivals, Reading, Bristol and Bath.

The town had a good masterplan to improve its centre but traffic dominance, disrepair and neglect of heritage buildings and the retail centre all conspire to limit value, investment, quality of place – and therefore growth.

Urbik helped devising a strategy and a series of projects, with funding methodologies, led by Metropolitan Workshop, to tackle these issues with a Town Centre Delivery Plan, now being implemented.
