Castleford

Architects McDowell Benedetti designed a new bridge for Castleford that was the star of the The Big Town Plan, reconnecting communities with the river

My role as design advisor alongside Roger Zogolovitch was to help local people identify schemes and select design solutions. I helped organise and chair meetings with local groups.

The second part of my role was to organise an architectural competition to find young practices to design the schemes local people wanted to see implemented, and to discuss these scheme with them.

Local people from ‘Cas’ then chose their favourite schemes from these competition designs in a televised event.

Several of the schemes were built, most notably a new town centre bridge, designed by McDowell Benedetti. Castleford has subsequently benefited from substantial new investment.
